Cachaça, the new indication of precedence
On October 15th, the Brazilian PTO (INPI) granted a Geographical Indication (GI) in the form of Indication of precedence. The association of artisan producers of Cachaça, in the Salinas region (Apacs) received the certificate at a ceremony held at the INPI office. The Salinas region produces approx. 5 million liters of Cachaça per year. This is the second GI granted to Cachaça in Brazil.
For those who are not familiar with this product; Cachaça is a distilled spirit made from sugarcane juice, which is usually used as an ingredient in tropical drinks; one of them is the well-known caipirinha.
Apacs’ president considers that such recognition will help to prevent falsification of the drink and will allow consumers to have greater security of the product; as well as, promote regional progress. The recognized GI will start to circulate from January 2014.
