“Cordero Chilote” was incorporated into the program “Sello de origen” (Seal of origin)
On April 8, 2015, the registry of “Cordero Chilote” was accepted and became the sixth geographic indication registered in Chile. This will help to promote this typical product of Chile worldwide.
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. That sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. In addition, the qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin.
In September 2012 the president of the “Ovejero de Chiloé” development company requested the local PTO to grant the special protection of denomination of origin to the product “Cordero Chilote (“Chilote Lamb”).
After analyzing technical studies concerning the components of the product “Cordero Chilote” and their origin, in 2013 the Ministry of Agriculture decided that said product should be protected and become a geographical indication (GI).
