New denomination of origin (DO) for Brazilian coffee
The Brazilian PTO announced the granting of a new Geographical Indication (GI) in the form of a Denomination of origin (DO) in their Industrial Property Journal. Since 2010, Brazil has granted two DO´s. One to ‘Litoral Norte Gaúcho’ related to rice; and the other to ‘Vale dos Vinhedos’ for wines.
The coffee producers in the Cerrado Mineiro region submitted an application on 2010 to INPI to obtain a DO for their coffee. This is a region which covers an area of 147,000 hectares with approximately 3,500 producers. Keep in mind that coffee Cerrado Mineiro already enjoyed an indication of source (Indicação de Procedência) granted by INPI in 2005.
It should be pointed out that in Brazil; there are two forms of GIs: indication of source (Indicação de Procedência) and denomination of origin (Denominação de Origem). When a product has a denomination of origin, it implies that it has special characteristics because of natural and human factors of a specific geographic region.
