Cooperation on IP between BRICS countries
On June 10 and 11, 2015, the Brazilian Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) hosted the 4th Meeting of Presidents of Intellectual Property Offices of the BRICS countries. BRICS is the acronym of an association of five major emerging national economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
During the meeting, staff of the BRICS IP offices provided updated information on their structure, statistics, and recent strategic developments, as well as on their future programs. They agreed that the five IP offices would start a gradual collaboration involving training of examiners, dissemination of IP and exchange of practices and technical information on IP.
The organization of the meeting was the last task of the INPI as president pro tempore of the IP BRICS (2014/2015). After the meeting, the coordination of the group was officially transferred to the Russian IP Office (ROSPATENT), which will be the IP BRICS president for 2015/2016.
The cooperation on IP between the five countries was officially established during the 5thMeeting of Heads of State of the BRICS countries, held in Durban, South Africa, in April 2013.The three major goals of the cooperation are to strengthen the exchange of information on IP legislation and IPR enforcement through meetings and seminars, jointly develop IP training programs, and promote the cooperation between the five IP offices.
