Geographical Indications in Brazil
Geographic indications are becoming more famous in Brazil. During last month, six applications were filed with the local PTO . Furthermore, a denomination of origin was granted to the state of Panamá. Especially the state of Parana has invested a lot of work and efforts regarding geographical indications.
Also, the recognition of the indication of origin was granted to the “Mel de Ortigueira” (honey of the region of Ortigueira). The Association of honey producers of that region (Apomel), considered that having received this distinction will help producers to export their products more easily, adding a complementary value to it. This Association has 48 beekeepers as members and produces about 500 tons of honey a year, both for the Brazilian market and abroad.
