High increase in resident patent applications
The Peruvian PTO (INDECOPI) reports that during 2014, local patent applications increased 40% compared to 2013, with 275 resident patent applications filed in 2014, the highest number ever registered in Peru.
Eighty-three out of the total were patent applications (13.7% higher compared to 2013) and 192 were utility model applications (54.8% increase compared to 2013).
Additionally, 193 out of the 275 applications were made by individuals, both inventors and independent entrepreneurs (58% more than in 2013), whereas 50 were made by national universities and research centers (51% more than in 2013) and 32 by companies (20% less than in 2013). It is the first time that Peruvian patent applications by universities and research centers outnumber those of companies.
In 2014, INDECOPI also increased by 38 percent the number of final decisions issued for patent and utility models files (from 774 files in 2013 to 1,065 files in 2014) and decreased its overall average time for issuing final decisions for patents (from 43.8 months in 2013 to 38.8 in 2014).
