High increase in Trademark Registrations
During the first quarter of this year, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) registered 21,668 distinctive signs, which means an increase of 34.5 % with regard to the same period of 2013, when only 16,113 were registered.
It is worth highlighting the fact that 3,566 applications were received by the online registration service “Marca en Línea”, compared to the 1,657 filed during January, February and March of last year. This means a significant advance in the use of online tools offered by IMPI. Since its launch in September 2012, more than 13,000 distinctive signs have been filed using this tool.
In addition, during the same period, the IMPI received 3,985 national applications through the Madrid system for the international registration of marks as a designated country. Furthermore, 24 Mexican companies made use of this system to seek protection for their trademarks in other countries and regions, such as the United States, Europe, Spain and China.
Regarding the acts of preservation of intellectual property rights –licenses, transfers of rights, franchises, renewals, changes of name of applicants, power of attorney accreditation, taxes and voluntary cancellations, among others – they also increased to 37,351 compared to the 30,042 carried out by the IMPI during the same quarter of last year.
