IMPI receives 81733 patent applications since 2009
The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) received from Universities and national Research Institutes between 3 and 4% of the total number of patent applications from 2009 until mid-July this year.
Independent inventors filed between 5 and 6% of the total number of patent applications during that period, while companies filed the highest percentage, between 89 and 93%.
Universities have filed 2007 patent applications since 2009: 297 in 2009, 349 in 2010, 338 in 2011, 435 in 2012, 374 in 2013 and 180 so far this year.
Regarding Research Institutes, they filed 803 patent applications from 2009 until 2013: 107, 121, 135, 204 and 174 respectively. So far this year this sector has filed 416 applications.
From independent inventors, IMPI received 4911 during the same period: 901, 893, 836, 972 and 893 respectively. During 2014 this sector has filed 416 patent applications.
With regard to companies, in the same period the volume of applications was: 12976, 13213, 12746, 13703 and 14003 from 2009 to 2013; so far this year companies have already filed 7405 patent applications.
It should be pointed out that among patent applications filed by Universities and Research Centers predominate inventions related to consumer goods in the areas of agriculture, foodstuffs, personal or domestic articles such as wearing apparel and footwear, health, life-saving and amusement.
