Mexico grants almost 4000 patents from January to May
The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has granted 3957 patents and registered 61 utility models as well as 859 industrial designs from January until May 2014.
Concerning patents granted by IMPI to foreign applicants, there were 3858 during said period, as well as 4 utility models and 611 industrial designs. Mexican applicants were granted 99 patents, 57 utility models and 248 industrial designs.
Patents granted during this period were filed on average two or three years ago, a lapse of time within the worldwide time required for a patent to be granted.
Regarding patentability, it is important to point out that IMPI has signed seven Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) agreements with the United States Patents and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and the China Patent and Trademark Office (CPO). Additionally, IMPI is negotiating the signature of a PPH agreement with the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property.
