Rio de Janeiro is the first Latin American city with a Top-level Domain (“.rio”)
Local mayor, Mr. Paes, announced that Rio de Janeiro is the first Latin American city having a domain name with the new top-level domain .RIO. New York, Londres, Paris, Tokio, Berlin, Roma and Barcelona are other cities that have this privilege of owning such kind of domains.
Requests will be accepted through their web site “Meu Dominio.Rio” until December 29th, 2014, and the registrations are expected to be granted beginning January 5th, 2015. The requirements to request a domain name with the new TLD extension .RIO are simple: the applicant must have a physical presence in Rio (headquarters, branch, actual residency), or it may have a franchisee or a licensee with seat in this city. Additionally, the name sought to be registered must be known in the city according to the Municipality of Rio’s point of view, and it should not be a generic name such as restaurant, hotel, bar etc.
This new web domain .rio will be administered by a company which was created by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. In this case the cost is similar to the ones in other big cities (30 dollars).
This domain will give tourists and companies the possibility to better identify the trademark and seize every business opportunity available. For their citizens, it is a privilege to be a part of this city which represents them abroad.
