Task force to reduce PTO´s backlog
In order to speed up their services, the Brazilian PTO (INPI) will set up a Task Force (TF) in 2016 to help reduce the backlog of examinations for patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), industrial designs, as well as appeals and nullity actions of trademarks and patents.
The TF, which will be divided into four working groups for each type of examination, will consist of 58 members of INPI´s staff who will collaborate on examination processes from January 1 to December 31, 2016.
On November 24, 2015, the total number of PCT patent applications filed at INPI since 2009 pending examination was 84,362. The goal for INPI is to complete 65,800 patent examinations in 2016.
Regarding industrial designs, 13,969 applications were pending substantive examination at INPI in November 2015. The goal is to publish 9,581 examination reports during 2016.
Finally, the General Coordination of Appeals and Cases of Nullity Administrative Procedures of INPI announced a goal to issue 3,080 appeal decisions regarding trademarks and 22 regarding patents in 2016.
